If you haven’t heard of Discord, get on over to their website. You can download and join a chat room for anything you’re into. Gaming, anime, coffee, Harry Potter — you name it and there’s a Discord channel on it!

Discord was created in 2015 as a way for gamers to better talk to each other while playing games online without needing to wait for Skype or TeamSpeak (or one of the other competitors) to load. But the idea took off quickly and now there are tons of people chatting on topics like Star Wars, Korean dramas, railroads — it’s all up in Discord!

With so many channels available right now we wanted to help you find the best ones out there. So here we’ve gathered 50 of the best channels on Discord. But first, a comprehensive list of what you can do with Discord and how to do it!

A Little Guide to…What You Can Do With Discord

Sign Up for Free:

The first thing you’ll need to do is sign up for an account. Either create a new e-mail address or use your existing one — the choice is yours! This will be the e-mail address you use for your Discord account from now on.

Once you’ve got your account up and running, log in and let’s head over to the Settings menu. We recommend going through the entire list of functions and checking out all the different options that Discord offers. Some of them are pretty cool, but there are a few that we like even more!

Some of the best Discord settings include:

Multiple Server Support: Add as many servers as you’d like. You can also disable or change any server to private, private only, or public with read-only access.

Custom Channels: Create chat rooms for anything you want by using custom channels. There are channels for specific games, world events, or even just topics! It’s fun to create and join a channel for your favorite TV show — this makes it easy for you to tell people where to go if they want to talk.

Push-to-Talk: You’re not required to talk all the time. Discord lets you set up your own Push-to-Talk key so that you can choose when exactly you’ll be saying something.

Direct Messages: For certain servers you can make a Direct Message channel, which is a great way for the discussion to be more private and invite-only. This works especially well when you’re part of several communities but need an isolated space to share information with each group.

Join a Server: Find discord servers and add them to the favorites list by clicking on the magnifying glass icon. It’ll be easy to see what server everyone is on instantly in case you want to join in on the conversation!

Many People Use Discord: You can add your Xbox live, PSN account, or Steam details so that people will know who you are in the outside world if they also play in one of these games.

The Discord Desktop App: You can access Discord through the desktop app if you don’t want to use your mobile device as a computer. If you’re not a fan of typing on a small screen, this option is perfect for you!

No Spam: If it’s inappropriate or spam in nature, filter it out by clicking on the little trash can icon next to that person’s name.

What to Do With Discord: Using the channels

So now you know what Discord is and how everything works with the settings. But here’s some advice on using Discord:

Start with a public channel like #general or #general discussion to get rolling.

Use the custom channels when you want your friends to join your world! It’s a lot of fun to try out new servers, find new friends, and talk about anything you want.

If you want a more private place to talk feel free to create one of your own. You can name it whatever you’d like and invite only the people that you’d like in there. Some people prefer the main chat as it is more of an open space for sharing information, while others prefer private channels for small conversations and one-on-one interaction.

There are a ton of different servers on Discord. So try out different channels and then use the custom channels to find the one that you’d like to use. It’s nice that you can have a place where you can talk about something without people being bothered if they’re not part of the conversation already!
